Looking for a 93-99 Jeep Cheroke/Grand Cheroke. Must have a 4.0L Engine. Either the 42RE transmission or the Asian, doesn't matter. Must run and drive. Willing to trade my FWD turbo.

I've driven a few Jeep Cherokees and my favorite was an early 90's Cherokee 2wd 5 speed manual 4.0. I could dump the clutch around a corner in 2nd and it would spin the tires like nothing. Which while not super fast was still fun to drive.

The same cannot be said for the 4.0 4wd Automatics I've driven. The normal Cherokee wasn't to bad as a 4wd Auto 4.0 but still nothing like the manual 2wd. However the Grand Cherokee 4wd Auto 4.0 is a complete dog. However for a DD any are fine. My Dad has had a few and all have been what I would consider very reliable.

Oh and my rant doesn't mean much but it's Cherokee not Cheroke.

Whops. Pretty much looking for something I can take off road and will pull a trailer with my car on the back and I'm pretty confident a Jeep would do a hell of a lot then what my dads truck does. Hardly ever see problems with the 4.0 engines. They are extremely durable as are the Asian transmissions The V8 5.2's and 5.9's are a different story, plus those things are fuel hogs. I'd like to get one with the 42/44RE transmission just because I know that thing inside out blindfolded.

Are you looking for a cherokee or a grand cherokee? I thought only the grand cherokee's had the v-8 engine.

Yea only the Grand Cherokee's had the 5.2 option and the 4.0, but the Cherokee's had the 4.0 or the 2.5 I believe (I4).

If you really want to tow your car get a full size truck or SUV. Towing a car with a midsize SUV or truck is fail and that is because I've done it.

We towed my GVR4 from Ft Wayne to Angola with my Dads 05 Grand Cherokee 4.0 Auto 4WD with the Towing package since he tows his boat with it too. And every single mile of it was 100% fail. In the city it wasn't *horrible* but still scary and not safe at all. It's simply not enough truck in my opinion and stopping took a while. Now on the highway it got TERRIFYING and I would never in 1,000 years try it again. Down each and every single overpass hill the trailer would shake side to side due to the increased speed and the truck not being able to control it. We were all over the road and at certain points I was grasping the Oh shit handle waiting for the crash. Granted the trailer was a POS and it didn't help things but it doesn't change the fact that the truck was getting yanked all over the highway.

Now you can surely try but I'm crazy and I wouldn't do it again, ever...

On another note if you are worried about Mileage keep the FWD. My Dads 4.0 Jeeps have all averaged 14-16mpg and he drives like an old man, because he is one. So you'll likely get less than that.

Kyles Expedition gets like 12mpg but it tows 50000000x better and is way more comfortable too. I would suggest something like that for your criteria.

I wouldn't tow with anything much smaller than my truck ever again. Maybe I'm just spoiled now. Drug an awd to the University of Illinois with my dad's F150 with a 5 speed and the 4.9 straight 6 cylinder. Pain in the friggin ass.

Look into a used Diesel Ram. The diesels will actually get better mileage and tow 10x better.

Towing with a smaller engine actually lowers your gas mileage because the smaller engine has to work soo much harder to tow the same amount of weight as compared to a larger engine. My Tundra, 4.7L non-VVT-i, gets about 15 in the City and 19 on the Hwy with no weight. I get about 13 or so towing the talon on the hwy. Like Corey said, that small of an SUV makes for an unstable towing experience.

Krebs knows, those Diesel Rams, mainly the older ones, go thru injection pumps like ther are nothing. It's all about preference I guess. But I will say that a Full-Size pickup is going to be a better route.

Agreed on the big engine not working so hard. I'm at like 12.9 myself daily driving it, but it'll do mid 10's while towing.

I towed both of my motorcycles on a trailer behind my V8 Mountineer and that was about all I would do with a mid size truck. It just isn't made to be able to control that kind of weight behind it. Look for something larger to tow the car with.

5.4 with K&N intake system (like the whole thing, not just the dror in filter), two large cats removed and dynomax ultraflow in place of the stock suitcase sized muffler. It also has the load leveling airbag suspension all the way around which is wonderful for towing but costing me an arm and a leg to keep it operating correctly. Think I've got a leak at the front driver's side corner now. Hooray.

Another leak? Damnit man.

It does ride nice for a big ass truck though. Even towing.

I towed my white RX7 from chicago to fort wayne with a late 90's grand cherokee with the V8 and I thought it pulled it good. You just have to watch how you load the car on the trailer and I would only use a trailer that has elec. brakes on it. The engine can pull it. It just that the suv isn't big enough to stop it as well without trailer brakes.
