Possibly a half ton pick up truck possibly with four wheel drive and probably a small V8............. or an older 3/4 ton truck with a V8.......... I personally wouldn't mess with a diesel they are a pain in the ass with maintenance and the gas motor will pull just as good as a diesel at least what your going to use it for.

Keep in mind a 2wd will always have a higher tow rating than the equivalent 4wd.

More maintenance with a diesel? Try a hell of a lot less. Oil change every 6k and a fuel filter every 20-30k. That's about it. Plus the fuel millage out of diesel is GREAT compared to a gas engine. A diesel truck would be great, but finding one in good shape for less than 8k is pretty hard. It would be the prime vehicle to tow with and really good in the winter time, but its just too much money and I don't like driving a full size truck on a daily basis. I already have a gas truck, granted its a piece of shit, it pulled my car around ok, but I hate driving that piece. I really don't think a good running Jeep would have any problems pulling, just braking would be the issue. With an electric brake trailer it would do pretty good, engine braking helps a lot too. If the car is set right on the trailer there shouldn't be an issue.

With a trailer brake it would have helped tremendously but none of the common Uhaul trailers have them that I've ever rented. If you're dead set on the 4.0 I guarantee the first time you tow the car you'll wish you got a V8.

Yeah, I would really like a 4.0, but I think your right. The extra torque from the V8 would help a lot. Most of the 5.2's average around 13-14mpg as the 4.0's average around 18-19 so there is a pretty good fuel consumption difference. Here I am talking myself into the 4.0L but I can always re-gear too to help with towing(which I'm sure will happen anyway), maybe a towing cam, lol.

Okay you are right maintenance wise there isn't that much but when something breaks on a diesel it will usually cost you quite a bit to repair it. There are a lot of pros and cons of with diesel vs. gas I have personally had a lot of luck with gas comparably to diesel. Like you said though a decent turbo diesel will run you 8 plus. And it might have a shit ton of hard miles on it. Personally a 4WD S-10 would do yeah pretty good. Those 4.3 liters are bullet proof. Like you said a trailer brake can do wonders.

The 4.0 does not average 18-19 though in my limited experience. My Dad has a combined 500k miles on 2 separate 4.0 Jeeps (One Grand Cherokee 4wd auto and One Cherokee 4wd auto) and they have both gotten 15-16 no matter how much city/highway. He drives slow too. I would be amazed if you got any better than he does, hence why the V8 isn't bad. The mileage is pretty much the same.

I have an '01 Cherokee, although I doubt the wife would want to trade it for a DSM! Black/4.0/auto 130k? We actually are looking to sell it if you are interested in purchasing. $3500 obo

I've got an '01 Grand Cherokee 4.7L V8, gets about 14 city and 18 hwy. Motor is strong and reliable, everything else is cheap crap that breaks.

Yeah my mom has a 99 cherokee sport with some cool aluminum wheels that my dad got for her, and i tend to agree with jeff. Motor is indestructible, yet one of the outer tie rods just fell off going down the road. Fell off. My mom calls me and tells me to go get my grandpa to come get her because it wouldnt steer, and i look under there after he pulls it back and yeah, it broke right the hell off, no nut or stud to be found. WTF.

That'd be a damned nice towing machine especially with the 100 gallon capacity external tank in the bed.
